How Do You Make an Effective House Cleaning Checklist?

Making and sticking to a house cleaning checklist can cut your weekly cleaning time in half while guaranteeing you a clean house every time.

To make your house cleaning checklist, start with a sturdy piece of poster board or cardboard. If more than one person will be using the checklist, for example your kids, then add lines to the list so that the chores can be checked off as they are done.

The first job on every checklist should be the jobs that "do themselves". Laundry and dishes are examples of these. Once you have started the washing machine or dishwasher you can walk away while they do the work and start on other chores.

The next job on your checklist should be clutter control. In order to do any in-depth cleaning such as dusting and vacuuming, you will first need to tidy up. Try using labeled baskets to make clean up faster. Simply walk around the house moving misplaced items from each room into the basket marked with the items destination. Once the baskets are full you can take them to their proper room and put away the contents.

After the clutter is taken care of, the next job on your house cleaning checklist should be cleaning the bathroom. Since the bathroom is the most used room in the house, it is often the dirtiest and the most dreaded. By cleaning this room first, you will get the worst job out of the way and feel more motivated to continue cleaning.

After the bathroom, the kitchen should be the next job on your list. Since the dishes were done earlier in the list, this step will only involve wiping down the counters and appliances.

After the kitchen, you should move on to the bedrooms. This step should include making the bed or changing the bedding and putting away clean clothes.

After all of the rooms are tidy, it is time to dust, sweep, mop and vacuum. Dust first so that all the dust and dirt can settle on the floor where it will be picked up by the broom or vacuum.

If you make and then follow this house cleaning checklist every time you clean, you will never miss a step and your house will always be spotless.
